Mach Rider - for NES

Mach Rider is a racing game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo in 1985. You grip the handles of a futuristic motorcycle and tear through a ruined future at speeds the game puts at up to 500 miles per hour, armed with a specially mounted Power Blaster, in a desperate attempt to save the planet. Mach Rider stands out as one of Nintendo's earliest attempts at a game you help build: it was sold as a Nintendo Programmable game, and it lets you design your own course.

The riding is fast and unforgiving. Enemy riders and obstacles crowd the road, every hairpin curve arrives sooner than you expect, and a collision at that speed ends the attempt, so the Power Blaster matters as much as the throttle. Mach Rider offers more than one way to ride: a long test of endurance, a course built around fighting your way through, and the design mode, where you lay out your own curves and straights and then try to survive them. Times and scores give you something to chase.

Mach Rider is remembered for its atmosphere as much as its speed: the stark future setting, the driving soundtrack and that lone rider on an empty highway. The course designer still feels generous, and the difficulty gives the game a long life for anyone who enjoys mastering something hard. For collectors it counts twice, as an early HAL Laboratory title and as one of the black box era Nintendo releases, and the Mach Rider name has stayed familiar long after the game itself, which makes this cartridge a satisfying one to own and actually play.
