Madagascar Kartz - for NDS

Madagascar Kartz is a kart racing game for the Nintendo DS, developed by Virtuos and published by Activision on October 27, 2009. Based on DreamWorks Animation's Madagascar, it is the second game in the franchise's spin off series, and it does the sensible thing with a cast of cartoon animals: it puts them in karts and lets them loose. The roster of Madagascar Kartz covers Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe, Gloria the Hippopotamus, King Julien, the chimps Mason and Phil, and the penguins, plus two guests from elsewhere at DreamWorks, Shrek and B.O.B. from Monsters vs. Aliens.

The racing is kept straightforward. You drive, you jump, and you pull off flips and rolls across stages drawn from scenes in the films. There are four ways to play: Quick Race, Championship, Time Trial and Checkpoint Race. Championship has you collecting mangoes and finishing first to unlock higher speed classes, running from 50cc up through 100cc and 150cc to a 200cc class raced in the reverse direction, along with more karts and tracks. Time Trial is about beating your own times for gold, silver and bronze medals, while Checkpoint Race asks you to collect as many hourglasses as you can before time runs out. Up to four players can race together.

Madagascar Kartz is remembered as a friendly, forgiving kart racer, the sort of game a young player can pick up without instruction and a group of four can share without anyone feeling lost. The licensed cast carries a lot of it: racing as the penguins or King Julien is its own reward if you grew up with the films. For collectors, Madagascar Kartz is a good example of the licensed Nintendo DS racer, and the guest characters from other DreamWorks films give it a curiosity value beyond the Madagascar name.
