Madden NFL 2000 - for N64

Madden NFL 2000 is a football game for the Nintendo 64, developed by Electronic Arts Tiburon and published by Electronic Arts in 1999. It set out to deliver the speed and power of NFL football, and it leans hard on both: faster moves and breakaway speed turn a short gain into a long run, and the contact lands with real weight. Body slams and collisions, drag downs, explosive sticking and crunching gang tackles are the heart of it. Madden NFL 2000 is a game about hitting as much as it is about scoring.

On the field, Madden NFL 2000 gives you ultra fast blur moves for slipping past defenders, hits that pop helmets loose, more scoring than you may remember, and a deep set of special animations so big plays rarely look the same twice. Hot Routes let you adjust receivers at the line, answering a defense before the snap instead of after it. Multiplayer Franchise mode lets a group run teams across seasons rather than single games, and the Madden Challenge gives solo players a run of tests to work through. Commentary is loud and in your face, stadium noise swells behind it, and up to four players can share one game.

Players still come back to Madden NFL 2000 because it hits the sweet spot for couch football: quick to pick up, deep enough to argue about, and at its best with four controllers and a full room. The Nintendo 64 years of the series have a feel of their own, heavier and more arcade flavored than what came later, and this is one of the friendliest ways into them. For collectors, Madden NFL 2000 belongs on any late Nintendo 64 sports shelf, a yearly release that still plays as well as it reads on the back of the box.
