Madden NFL 2001 is the Nintendo 64 chapter of the long running football series, developed by Electronic Arts Tiburon and published by Electronic Arts in 2000. What sets Madden NFL 2001 apart on the console is how much of it bends to your own taste. This is the entry built around customization, from the plays you call to the players who run them, and it gives a single cartridge a surprising amount of room to grow with you.
Madden NFL 2001 includes several customizable modes. You can create a play, create a player and run a franchise across multiple seasons, handling the roster decisions that keep a team competitive year after year. The headline feature is the set of Madden Cards you collect as you play. Cards let you change what a game allows, adding fifth downs for your side or holding the computer controlled team to third downs. Others adjust individual player ratings, unlock special stadiums, or open up the Hall of Fame and All Madden teams. Up to four players can share a session.
The affection for Madden NFL 2001 comes from that sense of control. Plenty of football games let you play the sport, and fewer let you quietly rewrite the terms of the contest, which makes every rematch a little different. It rewards tinkerers and it still works beautifully as a couch game with three friends. For collectors, Madden NFL 2001 is one of the richer football releases in the Nintendo 64 library and an easy recommendation for anyone building out the console's sports section.
