Magic Darts is a darts game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Romstar and published by SETA in 1991. It takes the pub game seriously and then gives it a cast: you choose one of ten characters to throw for you, a monkey, an alien and a robot among them. Magic Darts is built for company, with room for four players at the board, and it treats a throw as a real skill rather than a single button press.

Six games are included: 301, 501, 701, Count Up, Round the Clock and Half It. The 301, 501 and 701 games can be played under open or double rules, and the aim in each is to bring your score down to exactly zero. Count Up is a straight race for the highest total, Round the Clock asks you to hit one through twelve in order, and Half It starts everyone on 40 points and cuts your score in half when you miss the assigned numbers, which run 16, double ring, 17, 18, triple ring, 19, 20 and the bullseye. Every throw in Magic Darts rests on four things: position, curve, angle and power.

Players still enjoy Magic Darts because it is an honest sports game that is really about aim. Once those four factors click, it becomes the kind of game you can be measurably good at, and the six formats mean a session can last five minutes or a whole evening. With four players supported, it holds up as a party cartridge decades on. For collectors, Magic Darts is a late NES release from SETA and an unusual, welcome thing to find on a shelf full of platformers.
