Magical Vacation - for GBA

Magical Vacation is a role playing game developed by Brownie Brown and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance, arriving on December 7, 2001, and released again in the same region in 2006. It came out only in Japan, which is part of why it has such a devoted following: a soft, painterly fantasy about students of magic whose holiday turns into something far stranger, made by a young studio whose developers had roots in classic Square role playing games. The Japanese singer, model and actress Mika Nakashima appeared in the television commercials for Magical Vacation.

In play, Magical Vacation is a traditional role playing adventure. You move through the overworld, follow the story from place to place and fight the enemies you meet in battles that take turns. Its distinctive idea is elements, and there are sixteen of them. Each is strong against one element and weak against another, so choosing spells is a matter of reading those relationships rather than picking the biggest number. Three break the pattern: love, which is neither strong nor weak against anything, dark, which overpowers everything except love and light, and light, which has no weakness at all. Learning that web is most of the strategy.

Magical Vacation is loved for its tone as much as its systems. It is gentle and odd, full of small characters worth remembering, and it looks lovely on the Game Boy Advance in a way few role playing games of the time managed. Because it never left Japan, it spent years as a game people read about rather than played, and that history is exactly why it belongs in a collection. For anyone curious about where Brownie Brown came from and what the studio did next, Magical Vacation is the starting point.
