Major League Baseball featuring Ken Griffey Jr. - for N64

Major League Baseball featuring Ken Griffey Jr. brought Nintendo's baseball ambitions to the Nintendo 64, developed by Angel Studios and published by Nintendo in 1998. Griffey was the perfect cover star, the most electric player in the sport at the time, and the game carries the full set of Major League clubs and rosters behind him. Major League Baseball featuring Ken Griffey Jr. aims straight at the fantasy in its own pitch: make your dreams of becoming a Major Leaguer a reality, hit a grand slam, pitch a game with no hits against you, go for the cycle and steal home, all in the same afternoon.

On the field it is approachable without being shallow. Pitching, batting and fielding are quick to learn, and two players can sit down together for a game. Away from the diamond it leans on depth: live stat tracking across more than thirty major categories, so performances accumulate into something worth reading, plus roster control that lets you improve your team by making the right trades and picking up the best free agents. The result is a baseball game where, as the box promises, every pitch counts, because the numbers remember what you did with it.

Players still return to Major League Baseball featuring Ken Griffey Jr. because it sits in a sweet spot: fast enough for a casual game on the couch, detailed enough to follow a roster across a long run of games. For collectors it is a key piece of the Nintendo 64 sports library and a snapshot of a late nineties season, led by a cover star who defined the era. Anyone building a Nintendo 64 collection, or anyone who grew up watching Griffey's swing, will be glad to have this cartridge on the shelf.
