Maniac Mansion - for NES

Maniac Mansion brings the graphic adventure to the Nintendo Entertainment System. Created by LucasArts and published for the console by Jaleco in 1990, it drops you outside the home of the Edison family: Dr. Fred, Nurse Edna, their son Weird Ed, and two large disembodied tentacles, one purple and one green. A sentient meteor crashed near the mansion twenty years earlier, took control of the family, and set Dr. Fred to conducting human experiments while plotting to take over the world. Maniac Mansion stands out because almost nothing else on the system plays like it, and because it is genuinely funny.

You begin by choosing two of six characters to go in with Dave Miller, whose girlfriend Sandy Pantz is being held somewhere inside, and your pick shapes what you can do, since each companion brings different talents. From there you explore the house room by room, pointing at what you want to examine, pick up, open or use, and switching between your three characters so one can keep watch or hold a door while another works elsewhere. There is more than one way through Maniac Mansion, and the mansion rewards patience, note taking and a willingness to try silly things.

Players still love Maniac Mansion for its tone, which sits somewhere between a Saturday cartoon and a late night horror movie, and for a house that feels like a real place with its own logic. It was many console players' first adventure game, and it holds up because its puzzles come from curiosity rather than reflexes. For collectors it is an important cartridge: a LucasArts adventure running on Nintendo hardware, published by Jaleco in 1990, proof that the system had room for games about looking around rather than jumping. Maniac Mansion belongs in any collection with range.
