Mappy-Land - for NES

Mappy Land is a platform game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by TOSE and published by Namco in 1986, continuing the adventures of Namco's police mouse. Mappy has prepared a pile of birthday presents for his girlfriend Mapico, and the cat Nyamco and his Mukies have hidden them across the eight towns of Mappy Land, which gives the whole game a lovely, gentle urgency: the party is coming and the gifts are missing. What stands out is the variety of the setting, since every town has its own look, its own scenery and its own ideas.

You play as Mappy, running and bouncing your way through each town in search of the present waiting at the end of it, with Nyamco and the Mukies in pursuit. Trampolines carry you between floors, doors are used to surprise and stun the cats on your tail, and the towns hide traps and tricks that let a quick thinking mouse turn the chase around. It is a game for one player, built in short stages that get busier as you go, and the eight towns of Mappy Land keep bringing in new hazards rather than repeating the same streets.

Players love Mappy Land for its sweetness. It is bright, musical and kind in spirit, a chase game where the worst thing at stake is a birthday party, and that makes it easy to hand to someone who does not usually play games. Collectors want it because it is Namco on Nintendo hardware in 1986, a console sequel to a well known arcade cabinet, and because its art and sound show a studio clearly enjoying itself. Mappy Land is a small game with a long shelf life, and it looks good next to the rest of the Namco catalogue.
