Mario's Time Machine - for SNES

Mario's Time Machine is an educational adventure for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by The Software Toolworks and published by Mindscape in 1993. The setup is pure Mario: Bowser's sneaky Koopas have been slipping through time and stealing objects belonging to famous people, the very objects they needed in order to help and inspire the rest of us. What makes Mario's Time Machine stand out is where it takes you. Mario persuades the greatest minds in the world to build him a time machine, and the result is a Mario game set in real places and real centuries.

Mario travels the globe and the calendar, visiting Cleopatra in the Alexandria of 48 B.C., Plato in the Athens of 369 B.C. and Thomas Edison in New Jersey in 1879, among other stops. Each trip asks you to work out which object belongs to whom and to return it to its rightful owner, so there is a clear goal at every destination, and the historical detail is woven into the task rather than parked on a text screen. It is a single player adventure and a deliberately approachable one: the pace is relaxed, the reading is friendly, and the objects you recover give you a visible record of your progress.

Mario's Time Machine is loved today for exactly the reason it was made. It is a history lesson that never feels like one, and plenty of players can still name the figures they met because Mario introduced them. It also belongs to a short, curious chapter in which Mario turned up in classrooms about as often as in castles. For collectors, Mario's Time Machine is one of the essential pieces of that chapter, a natural shelfmate for the Mario's Early Years cartridges and a conversation starter in any Super Nintendo collection.
