Marvel Land - for Genesis

Marvel Land brings Namco's arcade platformer to the Sega Genesis, in a 1991 version made and published by Namco itself. In the land of Coni, the inhabitants lived in harmony around a mountain called Peace, inside which the amusement park known as Marvel Land was kept safe by the Fairies. Then King Mole became ruler of the under dwellers, sent his minions to take over Marvel Land and imprisoned the Fairies inside crystal balls. A young lad named Talmit is called upon to rescue Wondra the princess and set the Fairies free. The setting is what makes it stand out: a whole platform game staged inside a fairground.

Marvel Land runs across five worlds of seven stages each, and the goal in each one is to reach the exit door, more often than not by passing through a bullseye. Hit the bullseye at its center and you are awarded more points than you get above or below. Enemies go down if you jump on their heads or send your clones at them, and those clones trail your movement, have a limited life and disappear one by one as you spend them. Treasure chests hold boots for extra speed, dragon wings for higher jumps and a soft gliding landing, and the clone attack itself, while hidden warp doors can carry you forwards or backwards through the park.

Players still enjoy Marvel Land because it is cheerful and generous. The art is bright, the scoring gives you something to chase beyond simply finishing, and the warp doors reward curiosity. It is a platformer that wants you to poke at it rather than rush it. For collectors, Marvel Land is a Namco cartridge on a console where the Namco catalogue is well worth seeking out, and an unusual entry on the Genesis platform shelf thanks to its amusement park theme. It looks and sounds like a souvenir of a place you half remember visiting.
