Master of Monsters - for Genesis

Master of Monsters came to the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed by Opera House and published by Renovation Products, and it is still one of the most distinctive strategy games on the system. Its setup is pure dark fantasy. Gaya, king of the Dark World, summons five of his loyal subjects: a fierce warlock, a sorcerer with healing powers, an evil wizard, Nechromensa the master of chaos and confusion, and Samona, who holds power over all good and evil subjects. Only one of them can inherit the kingdom, and each must fight to the end to prove worthy of it. Gaya points to a door, behind which he has built a world, and sends them through.

Battles play out on hexagonal maps where your master holds a home tower and summons fighting monsters into the field. Each creature belongs to a family tied to an element, so matchups matter as much as raw strength, and monsters that survive grow into stronger forms, which makes a veteran kept alive across a long map far more valuable than a fresh summon. Claiming the towers scattered around the map feeds the magic you need to keep summoning, so every game becomes a slow fight over ground. Terrain shapes movement and damage, your master can wade in with magic of its own, and Master of Monsters supports up to four players.

Players still come back to Master of Monsters for how clean that loop is: summon, take ground, keep your best monsters alive, then corner the rival master. Strategy was thin on the Genesis, so this one stands apart on a shelf of platformers and brawlers, and its grim Dark World framing gives it a flavour few of its peers match. For collectors it is a quiet highlight of the Renovation catalogue, and an easy recommendation to anyone who likes a game that rewards patience.
