Math Blaster: Episode 1 reached the Sega Genesis in 1994, developed by Spidersoft and published by Davidson & Associates, and it is one of the few genuinely well made educational games on the console. The story is small and silly in the best way: the dreaded Trash Alien has captured Spot and littered the universe with garbage, and our hero Blasternaut sets out to rescue his robot pal. You blast through space junk, chase through dark and dangerous caverns and fend off nasty alien creatures on the way. What makes Math Blaster: Episode 1 stand out is that the arithmetic is not bolted on, it is the thing you play with.

The game is a set of stages that each ask for a different kind of thinking, strung together by Blasternaut's pursuit of the Trash Alien. One has you clearing junk out of space, another sends you down through the caverns, and the sums you work out to get through are answered at the speed of an action game rather than a worksheet. Settings let you choose which operations to practise and how hard the problems should be, so it suits a younger player finding their feet as readily as an older one who wants pushing. It is a single player adventure with a plain goal: beat the alien and bring Spot home.

People remember Math Blaster: Episode 1 with real warmth, often because it was the game they were allowed to play for as long as they liked, and it holds up because the action stands on its own terms. The bright art, the cheerful nonsense of the plot and the steady click of getting answers right are still satisfying. Educational cartridges are a small and curious corner of the Genesis library, and Math Blaster: Episode 1 is the one most collectors name first, which makes it a nice piece to have on the shelf.
