Medabots AX - Metabee Ver. - for GBA

Medabots AX: Metabee Ver. is a two dimensional fighting game set in the Medabots world, developed and published by Natsume for the Game Boy Advance in 2002. It is based on Medarot G and, unusually, it was released only in North America, so it never reached the series' home country. Like other Medabots releases of the era it arrived in two flavors, a Metabee version and a Rokusho version. This is the Metabee one, named for the beetle shaped Medabot most people picture first when they think of the series.

Medabots AX: Metabee Ver. is a straightforward fighter at heart: matches seen from the side, two Medabots trading blows until one of them is finished. If you know the series mainly from its role playing games, this is a change of pace, swapping collecting and story for direct combat, and the shorter shape suits a handheld because a bout is over in minutes. Two versions of Medabots AX were sold alongside each other, Metabee and Rokusho, and picking a side was part of the fun the series built its name on, the same friendly rivalry that ran through Medabots itself.

Medabots AX: Metabee Ver. is loved most by the people who grew up with the series, and it has stayed quietly sought after for a simple reason: it appeared in one region only, late in the life of a very crowded handheld, and plenty of fans missed it the first time around. For collectors it fills a real gap, a fighting game take on a series better known for other things, released as a pair so a shelf never looks quite complete with only one half of it. If you are building a Game Boy Advance library with character, Medabots AX: Metabee Ver. deserves a slot.
