Mercs - for Genesis

Mercs is a run and gun shooter that arrived on the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed and published by Sega Enterprises from the Capcom arcade game of the same name. The setup is pure early nineties action: terrorists have kidnapped a former President, and a team of mercenaries is going in to bring him home. What makes Mercs stand out is its sense of scale. Where many shooters of the era kept you small and nimble, Mercs throws burning vehicles, collapsing defenses and whole convoys at you, then hands you the firepower to answer back.

Play looks down on the action as you push upward through coastal defenses, rivers and enemy compounds, firing in eight directions and lobbing grenades. Weapons dropped by the enemy change a run completely: machine guns, bazookas, heavy artillery and a flamethrower that clears a path on its own. Tanks and gunboats can be taken for yourself and ridden until they fall apart. The Genesis release carries the arcade game across and adds a mode reworked for home play, with a longer campaign and a health bar in place of a single hit life. Mercs is a one player game here, so every call on which weapon to grab is yours.

Players still come back to Mercs because it is a clean example of what the Genesis did best: heavy sprites, thick explosions and music that drives you forward. It is short enough to finish in a sitting and hard enough that finishing feels earned. In a collection, Mercs sits comfortably beside the console's other great shooters, and it is one of the cartridges most likely to be picked up by a visitor who meant to try one game and kept playing instead.
