Metal Storm - for NES

Metal Storm is a science fiction action shooter for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Tamtex and published by Irem in 1991. It arrived late in the life of the console and made the most of that timing, with crisp animation, big mechanical bosses and controls that still feel wonderful. The battle station Cyber once kept the peace across the solar system, but its computer has gone wildly out of control, and the laser gun it operates has already destroyed Neptune. Earth is the next target on the list. As the pilot of an armored suit, you push into the core of Cyber to trigger its self destruct, and the clock is against you.

The hook of Metal Storm is gravity. At the press of a button your suit reverses the pull of the world and lands on the ceiling, then flips back again, and every stage is designed around that switch. Enemy fire, moving platforms, closing walls and bottomless gaps all turn into questions about which surface you ought to be standing on, and the finest moments ask you to invert in midair and keep moving. Along the way you collect shields and weapon upgrades, and each stage closes with a boss that measures how fluently you can read a screen that keeps turning upside down.

Metal Storm is the sort of game enthusiasts press on friends, because the gravity flip feels modern in a way that very little else from 1991 does, and the whole adventure is tuned rather than padded. It is short, sharp and endlessly replayable once your hands learn the rhythm. Collectors prize Metal Storm as one of the great late arrivals on the Nintendo Entertainment System, a technical showpiece and a hidden gem that earns its place on the shelf.
