Mick & Mack as the Global Gladiators - for Genesis

Mick & Mack as the Global Gladiators is an action platformer released for the Sega Genesis in 1992, developed by Virgin Interactive Entertainment and published by Virgin Games. It began life as a promotional game built around McDonald's, then quickly earned a reputation on its own merits. Mick and Mack are two kids handed goo shooters and sent out to clean up a polluted world, and the game that carries them is one of the best looking on the console: Virgin advertised more than 1,250 frames of character animation, and it shows in every slide, hop and recoil.

Across four worlds and twelve levels you blast slime, bounce between platforms and clear out the muck one screen at a time, with bonus rounds breaking up the climb. The worlds do a lot of the work: perilous peaks of ice with footing that skids out from under you, and the deep, dark Mystical Forest where the Red Snappy Piranha waits in the water. The goo shooters fire in a satisfying arc, enemies pop rather than simply vanish, and the music was written for the Genesis rather than carried over to it. Global Gladiators is a one player game.

Players still rate Global Gladiators highly because it plays as well as it looks. The controls are quick and forgiving, the levels reward looking around rather than rushing, and the whole thing has a bright confidence that has aged better than most platformers of its year. Collectors like it for a second reason: a promotional tie in that turned out to be genuinely good is a rare thing, and Mick & Mack as the Global Gladiators is the example people point to. It is an easy cartridge to recommend for any Genesis platformer shelf.
