Midnight Resistance - for Genesis

Midnight Resistance is a run and gun platformer released for the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed by Opera House and published by Data East, based on Data East's arcade game from two years earlier. You play the toughest soldier left in the Resistance, your family taken by the Evil Head, and the only reasonable answer is a three barrel machine gun and a straight line through his compound. Midnight Resistance stands out for the weight it gives to firepower: this is a game about collecting weapons, upgrading them and losing them, and that cycle runs through everything.

Seven levels send you climbing ladders, crawling bullet filled corridors and diving off ledges while tanks, missiles, flying robots, lasers and sawblades come at you. Defeated officers drop keys, and keys are the currency of the game: between stages you spend them at an armory on flamethrowers, shotguns, spread fire, nitro bombs and extra lives, which means every death costs you more than a life. You can lock your firing direction and keep shooting as you move, a carryover from the arcade controls that gives Midnight Resistance its distinctive feel. It is a single player game, and a demanding one.

Midnight Resistance keeps its following because the armory makes a run feel like a plan rather than a sprint. Choosing between a flamethrower now and something better later is a decision most shooters of the era never offered, and it still reads as smart design. Add a hard, memorable soundtrack and bosses built to be learned, and you have a cartridge that survives dozens of attempts. Collectors look for Midnight Resistance as one of Data East's strongest showings on the Genesis, and as a shooter that holds its own against the system's better known names.
