Mortal Kombat - for Genesis

Mortal Kombat came to the Sega Genesis in 1993, converted by Probe Software and published by Acclaim Entertainment from the arcade game that had taken over the country. The pitch is still irresistible: digitized fighters, a tournament with far more than a trophy at stake, and finishing moves that nobody who saw them ever forgot. Mortal Kombat on the Genesis is also one of the most historically significant cartridges on the system, because the choices made in this conversion, and the way they differed from the version on Nintendo's console, became part of the story of the industry.

It is a one on one fighter for one or two players, with a roster of seven warriors and a tournament to climb. The ladder builds through grueling endurance matches against two opponents in a row and intense mirror matches against your own character, then on to the four armed Goro and the shape changing Shang Tsung. Special moves come out with simple motions, bone shattering combos punish anyone who stands still, and a round can be finished rather than merely won. Players remember this release in particular for keeping the arcade's blood and finishers within reach of anyone who knew the right code.

Mortal Kombat still gets played because the fundamentals are good: the fighters are readable, the pace is heavy and deliberate, and two players of roughly equal skill can go at it for hours. The Genesis version has its own following among players who prefer its speed and its sound. For a collection it is close to essential, both as one of the defining fighting games of the nineties and as the cartridge at the center of the debate that gave games their rating system. Few Genesis titles carry that much history on a single label.
