Motor City Patrol - for NES

Motor City Patrol is a driving game with a badge. Released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, developed by Source Research & Development and published by Matchbox International, it casts you as one of Motor City's finest rather than a race driver. Instead of chasing a checkered flag you are handed a beat, a radio and a city full of traffic, which gives Motor City Patrol a flavor quite unlike anything else on the NES driving shelf.

A shift means patrolling every street, making routine arrests, issuing tickets and setting up speed traps for drivers in too much of a hurry. Then the calm breaks: a crime is in progress and you are the first to respond. You contact the helicopter patrol already circling the scene, pull up your surveillance map and work out the fastest route across town before the trail goes cold. Navigation matters as much as reflexes here, because knowing the city is what gets you there in time to make the collar. It is built for one player, with the whole department resting on your shoulders.

Players keep coming back to Motor City Patrol for its mix of roaming police work and honest arcade driving, a combination the NES rarely attempted. The surveillance map still turns every emergency call into a small puzzle, and the routine duties give the streets a life of their own between crises. As a later release for the system, Motor City Patrol is a satisfying find for collectors who enjoy the quieter corners of the library, and a genuinely different game to sit down with when you want something other than laps.
