Mystery Quest is a magical platform adventure released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, developed by Carry Lab and published by Taxan USA. You play a wizard's apprentice who has studied a long time and must now prove himself, and the test is a journey to four Mystery Castles in search of four magic talismans. The treasures at stake are described as the greatest gifts known to man: wealth, wisdom, happiness and peace.
Each castle is a tangle of rooms, intricate mazes and underground passages where it is entirely possible to get thoroughly lost, so Mystery Quest rewards mapping and patience as much as jumping. Strange creatures prowl the halls and pounce when you least expect it, and magic powers are hidden along the route for apprentices who think to look for them. Progress comes from exploring carefully, gathering what helps you and working out which passage leads onward rather than deeper into trouble. It is a game for one player, with the search for the talismans unfolding castle by castle.
Mystery Quest has a gentle, storybook charm that keeps players fond of it: bright castles, a wizard's errand and the steady satisfaction of untangling a maze. It is also a welcome change of pace from the harder edged action of its day, friendly enough for a quiet evening yet tricky enough to hold your attention for weeks. Collectors like Mystery Quest as an early Taxan release and as a reminder of how many small, imaginative platform games the NES library quietly holds. On the shelf or in the slot, it is a quest worth taking.
