Mystical Fighter - for Genesis

Mystical Fighter is a beat 'em up developed by Kid and published by Taito for the Sega Genesis in 1991. You begin at the Gate of Time, step through, and land in the Shogun Dynasty, in a place called The Underworld, where the Mystical Fighters are struggling to free their kingdom from the Evil Lord Kabuki. What gives Mystical Fighter its flavour is the setting and the mix of styles: this is a brawler fought with martial arts and magic together, dressed in the colours of Japanese legend rather than the city streets most of its rivals walked.

The fighting is close and physical. You kick, punch, spin and throw Kabuki's henchmen across the screen, and your magic powers break up the crowds when they close in from both sides. The route to the ultimate showdown runs through The Underworld and ends only once the Sacred Seal of Kentari is broken, so there is always a reason to push forward. If the streets get too busy, a friend can join in: Mystical Fighter supports two players at the same time, which is how the game is at its best.

Brawlers live or die by the company you keep, and Mystical Fighter remains a dependable pick for an evening on the couch with someone beside you. Its odd magic and mythic backdrop give it a character that sets it apart from the many fist fighters of the era, and the simple controls mean a newcomer can pick up a pad and join in at once. For collectors, Mystical Fighter is one of the more distinctive Taito releases on the Genesis and an easy recommendation for anyone building a shelf of two player brawlers.
