NBA in the Zone '99 - for N64

NBA in the Zone '99 is Konami's second run at Nintendo 64 basketball, developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Osaka and published by Konami in 1999. It keeps the simulation footing of the series and sharpens the parts that matter on the floor, with all new motion captured animation and a deeper set of play calling options. NBA in the Zone '99 carries all 29 NBA teams and over 300 real players, so the league arrives intact rather than trimmed down to a handful of stars.

Much of what makes NBA in the Zone '99 interesting sits in the control scheme. Advanced play calling lets you set up an offense instead of running straight at the rim, and pin point passing puts the ball where you aim it, which rewards patience and good spacing. Eight camera angles with adjustable zoom mean you can find a view that suits how you read the court. A create a player tool opens over 30 categories of customization, and a three point shootout and a slam dunk contest sit alongside the main game. Four can play at once.

Players still reach for NBA in the Zone '99 because it asks for a little more thought than many of its contemporaries and gives back more once you learn it. Passing and play calling turn a game of pickup into something closer to coaching, and the side events are a good way to warm up or settle a tournament. For collectors, NBA in the Zone '99 is the middle piece of Konami's Nintendo 64 basketball run and completes a set that is still pleasant to chase, which makes it an easy addition to a sports shelf.
