NBA Live '99 brought EA's long running basketball series to the Nintendo 64 in 1998, developed by NuFX and published by Electronic Arts. The pitch was simple: the soul of hoops, brought to life on Nintendo's machine. What makes NBA Live '99 stand out is the way it sits between simulation and spectacle, pairing the full set of NBA teams and players with high resolution arenas modeled on the real venues of the league.
On the court, NBA Live '99 plays with the measured feel the series is known for, built on motion captured NBA moves and a player reaction system that keeps defenders honest and teammates reading the play. A new Arcade mode cranks the action upward for faster, higher flying games when you want a break from straight basketball, and All Star action and three point shootouts round out the package. Team building is deep for a console game of its era: you can create players, trade them, sign them and release them, then take the results onto the court. Up to four players can share a game at once, which is where NBA Live '99 still earns its keep.
Players keep coming back to NBA Live '99 because it is easy to pick up and hard to put down with a room full of friends. The Nintendo 64 had a short but strong run of basketball titles, and this one holds a clear place in it, both for its roster depth and for the arcade flavor sitting alongside the simulation. For collectors, NBA Live '99 is a neat marker of where EA's basketball series stood at the end of the nineties, and it fits naturally beside the rest of a Nintendo 64 sports shelf.
