Newman Haas IndyCar featuring Nigel Mansell - for Genesis

Newman Haas IndyCar featuring Nigel Mansell is a racing game released for the Sega Genesis in 1994, developed by Gremlin Graphics Software and published by Acclaim Entertainment. It carries two famous names at once: Newman Haas, one of the great teams of American open wheel racing, and Nigel Mansell, the Formula One world champion who crossed the Atlantic and took the IndyCar title driving for them. The box promised 16 megs of IndyCar intensity, and that is the spirit of the thing: a methanol burning machine of around 750 horsepower, pointed down the fastest straights in the world.

Newman Haas IndyCar featuring Nigel Mansell asks for more than a heavy right foot. Before you reach the grid you design and tune your own car, matching the setup to the circuit ahead, and only then do you go out to learn the lines, choose your braking points and hold your nerve through corners taken at frightening speed. Races can be run alone or with a friend, since the cartridge supports two players, and the handling rewards drivers who think a whole lap through instead of simply holding the throttle open.

Players still love Newman Haas IndyCar featuring Nigel Mansell because it takes its speed seriously while staying a 16 bit arcade thrill at heart, quick to start and hard to master. It is also a time capsule. In the early 1990s Mansell's move to IndyCar was front page news for racing fans, and this cartridge is the Genesis version of that moment, complete with the team colors and the title in full. For collectors of Genesis racing, Newman Haas IndyCar featuring Nigel Mansell sits comfortably beside the console's other wheel to wheel favorites and still earns its place on the shelf.
