Nightshade - for NES

Nightshade is a comic book adventure for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Beam Software and published by Ultra Games in 1992. Metro City has fallen under a wave of crime run by the ancient Egyptian villain Sutekh, and the city's answer is a crimefighter unlike any it has seen. By day he is an ordinary citizen. By night he melts into the darkness like a phantom, and the press calls him Nightshade. The cartridge carries the subtitle Part One, and no sequel ever followed.

Nightshade blends adventure game investigation with street level brawling. You work your way through the city's darkest corners, examining things, talking to people and gathering the clues that point toward Sutekh, then settle matters with your fists when thieves, muggers and other alley scum get in the way. Popularity is your real power source: rescuing bystanders and dealing with villains builds the reputation that gives you the wit to decipher clues and the strength to keep swinging, and losing it means losing the night. Sutekh hunts you in return, with the human printing press, the closing wall of spikes, deadly jackal pits and a chilling freeze ray waiting for a hero who gets careless.

What keeps people talking about Nightshade is its tone. The writing is genuinely funny, the art has a true comic page look, and the elaborate traps that greet failure are a running joke few games of the time dared to attempt. It is one of the more unusual things Beam Software made and one of the more unusual cartridges on the NES, which is precisely why collectors seek it out. If you enjoy adventure games, superheroes or simply games with a personality of their own, Nightshade deserves a place on your shelf.
