Nintendogs: Best Friends is one of the versions of Nintendo's puppy raising phenomenon for the Nintendo DS, developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo in 2005. The idea was deceptively simple: give players a virtual pet that responds to touch and to voice, then let the hardware carry the feeling. Nintendogs: Best Friends turns the DS into a lap for a puppy, using the stylus for petting and the microphone for spoken commands, and it became one of the titles that showed people what the system was really for.

You train your dogs by speaking commands into the microphone, pat them with the stylus and play games such as fetch with a frisbee. Shops let you buy toys, food and accessories, and three types of competition are open to you, with trophies waiting for the dogs that place well. You start with a small selection of the breeds in the game, decided by the version you own, and unlock more breeds and items as you keep playing. Bark Mode links two nearby systems wirelessly so your dog and a friend's dog meet on both screens, and a breed you do not have can be unlocked that way.

Nintendogs: Best Friends is still remembered with real affection, partly because so many people met the Nintendo DS through it and partly because the dogs themselves hold up: they respond to you, they learn their names, they are plainly pleased to see you. Very little since has repeated that trick in quite the same way. For collectors it is a landmark of the DS era and one of the games that explains how the system reached people who had never owned a console, which makes Nintendogs: Best Friends a warm and worthwhile addition to any shelf.
