Nintendogs - Lab & Friends - for NDS

Nintendogs: Lab & Friends is the version of Nintendo's puppy raising simulation that leads with the labrador retriever, developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS in 2005. There is no score to beat. You adopt a dog, you care for it, and the game quietly builds a relationship out of small daily attention. Nintendogs became a defining early success for the DS precisely because of how it was played: a hand on the touch screen, a voice in the microphone, and a puppy that reacts to both. Six breeds are available when you start, the labrador among them.

In Nintendogs: Lab & Friends your time goes on the things a real dog needs. You name your puppy by speaking to it, train commands and tricks by repeating them into the microphone, and groom, pat and wash it with the stylus. Walks take you out around the neighborhood, where items turn up along the way, and the shop stocks food, toys and accessories for the money you earn. Three types of competition give the training a purpose, with trophies for the dogs that perform. Eighteen breeds exist in total and you unlock more as you progress. Bark Mode connects two nearby systems wirelessly, letting both players see their dogs meet, and a breed you do not own yet can be unlocked by that meeting.

Nintendogs: Lab & Friends remains the friendliest entry point to the series, partly because the labrador is the dog most households picture when they picture a dog. The appeal has not faded: it is warm, undemanding and ideal in short sessions. For collectors it is a key piece of Nintendo DS history, a title that explains the system's reach better than most, and a cartridge that is just as welcome by a sofa now as it was when it was new.
