North and South - for NES

North and South turns the American Civil War into a bright, fast and surprisingly funny strategy game. Developed and published by Kemco for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, it hands you a map of the states, a set of armies and the chance to rewrite history from either side. The bugle calls you to the battlefield, your troops await your orders, and what follows is part campaign map and part arcade game.

On the map you move entire armies between territories, surround the enemy, lay siege to forts and send raids after the gold laden trains that keep a war funded. When two armies meet, the game drops you into a battle you play by hand, lining up cavalry, infantry and cannon and leading the charge across the field yourself. Fort assaults and train robberies get scenes of their own, so a campaign becomes a string of short, lively contests rather than a sea of menus. Two players can take the North and the South and settle the whole thing between them, which is how most people remember North and South best.

North and South is loved for how easily it opens up. The strategy is simple enough to learn in a few minutes, and the hands on battles mean a bold charge can rescue a hopeless position, so nothing is ever quite decided. The cartoon styling and the weather that interferes with everybody's plans keep the mood light even as the campaign tightens. For collectors it stands as one of the most approachable strategy games on the NES and one of the system's finest games for two players, which makes North and South easy to recommend and hard to put back on the shelf.
