Operation Wolf - for NES

Operation Wolf is the home version of Taito's landmark arcade gallery shooter, developed and published by Taito for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989. The objective is direct: five hostages are held in an enemy concentration camp, and you are going in to bring them out. Operation Wolf was one of the first shooters built around a storyline rather than a high score alone, and it took much of its atmosphere from the way real special operations missions were described.

The campaign runs across six stages: Communication Setup, Jungle, Village, Powder Magazine, Concentration Camp and Airport. The scene scrolls past while you hold your ground and clear the field, and completing each stage pushes the story forward. Finish the Jungle, for example, and an interrogated enemy leader gives up the location of the camp where the hostages are kept. Ammunition and grenade pickups have to be managed as carefully as your aim, since the soldiers keep coming and civilians wander into the line of fire. It is a solo mission, playable with the controller or with the light gun.

Operation Wolf still works because the pressure never lets up. Learning where the enemies appear, saving your grenades for the worst moments and watching the hostages reach safety at the end gives a run the shape that many shooters of the era simply never had. It is also a piece of arcade history, the game that set the pattern for the gallery shooters which followed it. For collectors, Operation Wolf is an essential Taito cartridge and one of the NES titles worth keeping a light gun handy for.
