Orb-3D - for NES

Orb-3D is an action puzzle game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Software Toolworks and released in 1990. An evil space wizard named Krohn has mastered the power to control a black hole and plans to rule the universe with it, and your ship, the Millennium Orb, is the only craft that can withstand it, so a quiet survey assignment in a remote corner of space turns into a mission to stop him. Orb-3D stands out for its mix of orbital motion and target clearing, and for the pair of 3D glasses that came with it, which deepen the look without being needed to play.

Orb-3D sets thirty chambers between you and Krohn. Force fields on the left and right of each chamber must be moved to catch the Millennium Orb and keep it in play. In the center of every chamber sits a plane covered in targets, and the Orb circles it until you dive out of your orbital path to strike them. Clearing a chamber means meeting its goal, which usually asks you to find an order that removes every target. Fuel is the other pressure: it drains as you play and drains much faster whenever a force field misses, so when it runs low you stop at Vern's for a refill and pay with earned credits. Orb-3D is a one player game, and it sits close enough to Beyond the Black Hole that the two are often talked about together.

Players still enjoy Orb-3D because nothing else on the Nintendo Entertainment System asks for quite the same mix of skills: reading a curve, timing a dive and watching a fuel gauge all at once. It is an inventive, slightly strange corner of the library. For collectors, Orb-3D is an easy game to recommend as something different, a 1990 release that gives a shelf of platformers and shooters a welcome bit of variety.
