Othello - for NES

Othello for the Nintendo Entertainment System brings the classic board game of discs and strategy to the console. Developed by Bit and released in 1988, this version keeps the quiet, thoughtful shape of the tabletop game and adds a computer opponent that is always ready for a match. Othello is one of those titles that needs no explanation at all: the rules fit into a sentence, and the depth arrives a few moves later.

The aim is to finish with more discs of your color on the board than your opponent has. You do that by outflanking, which means trapping one or more of your opponent's discs between two of yours so that they all flip to your color, a move that can swing a corner or an entire edge at once. Othello offers three skill levels against the computer, so the game can stay gentle while you learn the shapes and push back hard once you know them, and two players can sit down together with a pad each.

Players keep coming back to Othello because the balance never really ages. Every move hands your opponent something, so the game becomes a question of what you are willing to give away, and the three skill levels give a solo player a real ladder to climb. For a collector, Othello is a tidy piece of Nintendo Entertainment System history and a board game conversion that plays as well now as it did then, the kind of cartridge you leave in the console when friends come over.
