OutRun 2019 - for Genesis

OutRun 2019 is a racing game for the Sega Genesis, developed by Hertz and published by Sega of America in 1993. It takes the basic structure of the classic OutRun games and moves it into a futuristic setting, swapping sunny coastal roads for circuits built on a far bolder scale. The cars in OutRun 2019 reach nearly 700 km/h, and the tracks answer that speed with some spectacular inclines. For Genesis owners who wanted the arcade feeling of OutRun pushed into something faster and stranger, OutRun 2019 was an easy choice.

Play is built around the time limit. There are four different track sequences, and your aim is to clear each section of track before the clock runs out, which keeps every run tense rather than leisurely. As in the original OutRun, forks appear in the road near the end of each stage, so you choose your own route through a sequence and can come back later for the paths you missed. Other cars share the road, and at these speeds learning to read traffic early matters as much as holding the accelerator down. OutRun 2019 is a single player game.

Players still come back to OutRun 2019 for the sheer sense of velocity, something the Genesis handled well, and for the pleasure of memorising a route until the time limit stops being a threat. It is also a game with a distinct look among Genesis racers, a neon tinted future that has aged into its own kind of charm. For collectors, OutRun 2019 sits in an interesting spot: a sequel in name and spirit to one of the most famous arcade racers ever made, yet very much its own thing. It is a fine addition to any Genesis racing shelf.
