Pac-Attack - for Genesis

Pac-Attack is a falling block puzzle game developed and published by Namco for the Sega Genesis in 1993. It takes a familiar idea, pieces dropping onto a board that you must keep from filling up, and threads the Pac-Man cast through it, so clearing space is not only a matter of tidy stacking. Pac-Attack stands out among puzzle games of its era for exactly that twist: ghosts clutter your board, and Pac-Man himself is the tool you use to clear them away.

Pieces are made up of blocks, ghosts and Pac-Men. Drop a Pac-Man into place and he sets off eating every ghost in his path, while completed lines clear in the usual way. Eating ghosts fills the Fairy Meter, and once it is full a fairy eventually arrives: wherever she lands, she waves her wand and every ghost in the eight lines below her vanishes, which often collapses a hopeless board into a run of completed lines. Pac-Attack also has a two player mode, where one player hunts Blinky and the other hunts Sue, and every ghost you eat drops onto your opponent's board. A puzzle mode offers one hundred set stages to solve, and you can retry any of them freely.

Players still love Pac-Attack for the swing between panic and relief that the Fairy Meter creates, and for a puzzle mode that rewards patience rather than quick hands. It is approachable enough for someone who has never finished a puzzle game, and deep enough to keep a household arguing over the two player mode. For collectors, Pac-Attack is an appealing piece of the Genesis puzzle shelf and one of the friendlier Pac-Man games of the period.
