Panorama Cotton - for Genesis

Panorama Cotton is a shooter developed by Success and published by Sunsoft for the Sega Genesis in 1994, and it is one of the most technically ambitious games the console received. It takes the Cotton series out of side scrolling and into a pseudo 3D view, with the action rushing into the screen in the manner of Space Harrier. The story is pure fairy tale mischief: the dark witch Wool threatens the fairy kingdom, Queen Velvet sends the little fairy Silk to fetch the red haired witch Cotton, and Cotton agrees to help in exchange for willows, her favourite food. When someone poisons the promised willows, Cotton sets off after the culprit with Silk at her side.

Levels in Panorama Cotton scroll into the screen and also travel vertically, horizontally and diagonally, so the ground and sky swing around you while you move Cotton across the frame, firing at oncoming enemies and threading the gaps in the scenery. Her weapon can be upgraded to higher levels as you progress, and special items let her cast magical spells, which gives the shooting a pleasing rhythm of building up power and spending it. It is a single player game, bright, fast and anime styled throughout.

Panorama Cotton is loved for its sheer spectacle: colour, speed and scale that few Genesis games attempted, wrapped around a cheerful cast. The sense of motion is still remarkable, and the willow chasing story keeps the whole thing light on its feet. For collectors, Panorama Cotton is a highlight of both the Genesis shooter catalogue and the Cotton series as a whole, the kind of game you keep within reach to show people what the hardware could do.
