Paperboy - for Genesis

Paperboy brings the arcade favourite to the Sega Genesis in a 1992 conversion developed by MotiveTime and published by Tengen. The premise is beautifully simple: you ride a bicycle loaded with tightly rolled newspapers down a suburban street, and you have one morning to keep your customers happy. What made Paperboy a hit in arcades, and what carries over here, is the comedy of the neighbourhood itself, which never stays still and never quite behaves.

Points come from landing papers in subscribers' mailboxes and on their porches, and every bad throw costs you a customer, so the route gets harder as your aim gets worse. Nonsubscribers are fair game: break their windows, lamps and statues and the score climbs nicely. Meanwhile the street fights back with bad drivers, skateboarders, remote control cars and plenty of other hazards that can end a run in a moment. Finish the day's round and Paperboy sends you to a BMX styled training course, a bonus stage built to test your steering and your throwing arm. Paperboy supports two players.

Paperboy endures because the idea is instantly readable and the execution is funny. Everyone understands a paper round, and almost nobody resists the temptation to aim at the wrong house. The difficulty curve is honest, the runs are short, and one more try is always tempting. For collectors, Paperboy is a cornerstone arcade conversion and one of the recognisable Tengen releases on the Genesis, a game that earns its spot in any collection built around arcade classics.
