Paperboy - for N64

Paperboy brings the arcade classic to the Nintendo 64 in full 3D, developed by High Voltage Software and published by Midway Home Entertainment in 1999. The job is the one you remember: deliver the Daily Sun up and down the street while the neighborhood does everything it can to stop you. What makes this Paperboy stand out is how far it pushes that simple premise into three dimensions, with routes you can wander off, shortcuts to find and a town full of trouble that now includes grumpy neighbors, mad gorillas, vampires and tornadoes.

You ride, you throw, you try not to crash. Papers go to subscribers, windows are fair game for anyone who cancels, and a clean run means reading the street ahead instead of just pedaling hard. There are more than forty five routes to work through and over a hundred interactive obstacles waiting in them, so no two deliveries play out quite the same. Ramps and jumps feed a stunt system you define yourself, which turns getting air into its own small game alongside the paper round. You can play as a paperboy or a papergirl, and hidden routes reward anyone curious enough to go looking.

Paperboy still works because the core idea is perfect: a simple job, a hostile street and a timer ticking away in the back of your mind. The Nintendo 64 version adds room to explore without losing the arcade snap, and the freedom to chain tricks together gives it a replay value the older versions never had. For collectors it is an easy one to recommend: a famous name, a real attempt at reinventing it rather than copying it, and a cartridge that still gets picked up and played by people who have never stood in front of the arcade machine.
