Phantasy Star IV - for Genesis

Phantasy Star IV is the concluding chapter of Sega's science fiction role playing saga on the Genesis, published by Sega in the mid 1990s and widely regarded as the high point of the series. It returns to the Algol star system and the planet Motavia, and it draws together threads from the games that came before it. Phantasy Star IV is the entry longtime fans point newcomers toward: approachable at the start, generous with its story, and confident in the way only a fourth entry can be.

Play is classic turn based role playing with a few touches of its own. You gather a party, equip and train them, explore towns, deserts and dungeons across the worlds of Algol, and work through battles where the right technique at the right moment settles things. Routine encounters can be handled with stored sets of commands, which keeps the pace up, and party members can combine their techniques and skills into stronger joint attacks once you work out which pairings fit together. Story scenes are told in illustrated panels that give the long quest a comic book sweep.

Phantasy Star IV endures because its cast, its music and its sense of a finished story still hold up decades later, and because it respects your time in ways many role playing games of its era did not. It is also one of the more sought after Genesis cartridges among collectors, and a natural companion to the earlier games in the series. Whether you are finishing the Algol story or starting here, Phantasy Star IV deserves a permanent place on the shelf.
