Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is a courtroom adventure developed and published by Capcom, released for the Nintendo DS in 2005. You play a young defense attorney handed clients who look guilty on every page of the file, and your job is to find the thread that unravels the case. The series began in Japan on an earlier handheld, and this is the version that introduced Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney to players elsewhere, rebuilt for two screens and carrying an extra fifth case, Rise from the Ashes, written for this release. Its mix of comedy, melodrama and honest deduction had very little competition at the time.
Every case runs in two parts. Investigation puts you at crime scenes and in front of witnesses, collecting statements and evidence into your court record. Then the trial begins and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney becomes a duel: you hear each testimony, press witnesses for more detail, and object when a sentence collides with something you are carrying, naming the exact piece of evidence that proves the lie. Get it right and the story opens up. Get it wrong and the judge loses patience. The cast is drawn in a bright anime style, the writing is funnier than a game about murder trials has any right to be, and the DS lets you shout your objections into the microphone if you want the full effect.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is the game that turned courtroom drama into a genre on handhelds, and players still hand it to friends who claim they do not enjoy reading in games, because the twists land and the characters stay with you. One player, no reflexes required, just attention. For a collection it is close to essential on the Nintendo DS, both as a fine piece of writing and as the first chapter of a trilogy best owned in full.
