Pirates! Gold - for Genesis

Pirates! Gold brings MicroProse's celebrated age of sail adventure to the Sega Genesis, developed and published by MicroProse Software in 1993 as an expanded version of Sid Meier's Pirates!. The Golden Age of Buccaneering has returned: as a privateer captain you crisscross the untamed Spanish Main in search of adventure, leading a crew of wild buccaneers across the open seas of the 17th century Caribbean and into new harbour towns. Pirates! Gold is unusually open for a Genesis cartridge, a game about making your own way rather than following a set path.

A career is built from many small parts. You risk your booty and your life in bold attacks upon enemy ships, cross cutlasses with scurvy noblemen, hunt for magnificent treasures, forge alliances with powerful dignitaries, and embark on rescue journeys that put your courage to the test. Sailing, trading, recruiting and dividing the loot all sit alongside the fighting, and the mix of action, adventure and strategy means no two captains retire in the same shape. Will you win your rightful place in history, or end up shipwrecked on a distant island? Pirates! Gold leaves that to you.

Players still love Pirates! Gold because it is endlessly replayable: a short session can be a single raid, and a long one can be a whole career. Very few Genesis cartridges offer that kind of freedom, which is part of why it still stands out in the console's library. For collectors, Pirates! Gold is the strategy and adventure pick that balances a shelf full of platformers and shooters, and it plays beautifully with a controller in hand.
