Polaris SnoCross is a snowmobile racing game for the Nintendo 64, developed by Vicarious Visions and published by Vatical Entertainment in 2000. It carries the Polaris name and the attitude that goes with it: if it does not say Polaris, it is not SnoCross. You join the Polaris Snowmobile Racing Team and take on the mountain, and what makes Polaris SnoCross stand out is simply its subject. Snow racing was a rare sight on home consoles, and a sled handles nothing like a car, so this is one of the few Nintendo 64 racers that feels genuinely unfamiliar at first.

Racing in Polaris SnoCross is about reading terrain as much as holding a line. Courses throw monster jumps, hidden pitfalls, shortcuts and treacherous ground at you, and knowing where the snow will help and where it will swallow you is most of the skill. There is a trick system as well, so air time pays off beyond distance, and you can pull off a variety of insane stunts once you trust a jump. You can customize your sled, and the handling is built to move, twist and turn the way a real snowmobile does. Race the AI riders, who compete fiercely, or bring in friends: multiplayer supports up to four.

Polaris SnoCross still earns its place because snowmobile racing games are scarce, and the mix of big jumps, tricks and slippery footing gives it a character road racers cannot match. It is easy to start and generous to anyone who learns a course properly. For collectors, Polaris SnoCross is one of the more interesting racers from the final stretch of the Nintendo 64 era, a licensed game built around a sport few others touched. It is a fine pick for a winter evening with four controllers out.
