Puggsy - for Genesis

Puggsy is a platform game with a strong puzzle streak, developed by Traveller's Tales in the United Kingdom and published by Psygnosis for the Sega Genesis in 1994. You play Puggsy, a small round creature who has crash landed on an alien planet only to have his spaceship stolen, and your single goal is to get it back and go home. What made Puggsy remarkable in 1994, and what still makes it feel fresh, is its physics: almost everything on screen is a real object with weight that you can pick up, carry, throw, stack and stand on.

Each of the many single player levels is a self contained problem set in a different environment, and reaching the exit usually means working out what the objects lying around are actually for. Some have obvious uses, like keys that open doors or a gun that clears a path, while others matter only because of where you can put them: pile the right things in the right spot and a ledge that looked impossible becomes a short hop. Enemies wander the stages and cost Puggsy a life on contact, and six evil guardians stand between him and his ship.

Puggsy is remembered fondly because it trusts the player. There is rarely one sanctioned solution, so a level you solve by building a staircase of furniture feels like your own idea rather than the designer's, and that improvisation keeps the game lively long after other platformers of the era have given up their secrets. It is also an early showcase from Traveller's Tales, a studio that went on to much bigger things, which adds real interest for collectors. Puggsy is a thoughtful, friendly and slightly odd cartridge, and exactly the sort of game a well rounded Genesis collection should have on it.
