Pyramid is a falling block puzzle game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Thin Chen Enterprise and published by American Video Entertainment in 1990. It came out without Nintendo's license, and unlicensed releases like this one have a look and a feel of their own that collectors know at a glance. The dressing here is ancient Egypt, complete with a wink at the notion that the people who built the pyramids invented this sort of game too, and Pyramid wears that theme lightly: stones falling from the sky, a pit filling up below, and a pharaoh's sense of how precisely things ought to fit.

There is really only one rule in Pyramid: do not let the pit fill with stones. Each stone has to be turned, twisted and dropped so that it slots into the shapes already settled underneath, fitting so tightly that not even a feather could slide between the cracks. Bombs and other hidden surprises turn up to shake a tidy stack loose or punish a careless one, so the game asks for planning and quick reflexes in the same breath. It is a single player game built on the loop that makes this kind of puzzler so hard to put down: one more stone, one more row, one more attempt at a better score.

People still play Pyramid for the same reason they still play any good block puzzler. It is instant to understand, it speeds up faster than you do, and a strong run feels like something you earned rather than something you were given. Its place in the NES catalogue as an unlicensed release gives it a curiosity value well beyond its modest reputation, and American Video Entertainment titles are a collecting niche of their own. If you keep a puzzle shelf, or you are filling in the corners of the NES library that the licensed lists leave out, Pyramid is a satisfying find.
