R.B.I. Baseball - for NES

R.B.I. Baseball is Tengen's baseball game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Tengen in 1989. What set R.B.I. Baseball apart from everything else on the NES diamond was simple: real players. All ten teams carry rosters and player statistics licensed from the Major League Baseball Players Association, so the names on the lineup card are the names from the sports pages, and no two of them are interchangeable. A strong hitter hits like one, a fading pitcher pitches like one, and those skills and stats shape the outcome of every play just as they do in the real game.

Because the statistics drive everything, R.B.I. Baseball rewards good managing as much as quick hands. Pitch selection, batting order and knowing when to pull a pitcher who has lost his command all matter, alongside the basics of timing a swing and getting the throw to the right base. You can take on the computer across a nine game season, or settle things with a friend in your own best of seven series. The presentation keeps the mood light, with squat cartoon players and a streak of humor running through the animation, which is exactly what makes the serious numbers underneath so easy to enjoy.

R.B.I. Baseball is still the NES baseball game many players name first, and plenty of them will tell you flatly that nothing since has improved on it. It is quick to learn, fair, and endlessly replayable against a friend, and the real rosters give every single game a little extra weight. Collectors know R.B.I. Baseball as one of the standout Tengen releases on the system, from a stretch when the company was putting out some of the most interesting sports games the NES had. If you are only going to keep one baseball cartridge on the shelf, this is a very strong candidate.
