Racket Attack - for NES

Racket Attack is a tennis game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by TOSE and published by Jaleco in 1988. It puts you on center court at the national finals with a full stadium watching, and it sells the moment: a crowd that roars, an umpire who calls every let and fault, and matches played out in hundred degree heat. Racket Attack came early enough in the life of the NES to be many players' first tennis game, and it still carries that big occasion feeling.

Play follows the familiar shape of a real match: serves, returns, volleys at the net and long rallies from the baseline, with the score called out as love moves to fifteen, thirty, forty and match point. Surfaces change the feel of a rally, with clay and grass both on offer, so a game that works on one court may not carry you through the next. A power serve and a ferocious backhand are the tools you lean on, though placement matters as much as power, and consistency matters most of all. Racket Attack also supports two players, which is where the long deciding sets tend to happen.

Players keep Racket Attack around because it is a tennis game you can sit down with and feel immediately. Rallies build tension without complicated inputs, the umpire's calls land at just the right moment, and a close match against a friend still comes down to who holds their nerve at match point. As a Jaleco sports release from 1988 it is also a tidy piece of NES history, from the period when the system was filling out its sports shelf. Racket Attack belongs in any collection built on sports games, on two player games or simply on the classics of the era.
