Rally Challenge 2000 - for N64

Rally Challenge 2000 is a rally racer for the Nintendo 64, developed by Genki and published by Southpeak Interactive in 1999. It takes you on a scorching tour around the world behind the wheel of nine World Rally Championship cars, each with its own settings for speed, torque and steering. What sets Rally Challenge 2000 apart from the circuit racers on the system is the surface under the tires: loose terrain, nasty weather and roads that fight back, where even a straight stretch can end a promising run.

Driving here rewards restraint. The cars handle differently from one another and the ground is never flat or forgiving, so the quick way through a stage is usually the smooth way. Weather closes in, visibility drops, and collision damage is modelled, which means a few careless clips into the scenery can put you on the sidelines before the finish. You can go it alone or race with up to four players, and instant replay lets you watch the whole run back from several camera angles, which is as useful for learning a stage as it is for showing off afterwards.

Rally Challenge 2000 holds up because rally suits a games console so well: it is you, a clock and a road that keeps trying to throw you off it. Genki knew how to make cars feel like cars, and the sense of weight shifting under braking is still satisfying today. For collectors, rally is a small corner of the Nintendo 64 library, and Rally Challenge 2000 is one of the better entries in it, a cartridge that is easy to skip past on a list of the console's racers and genuinely rewarding once it is in the slot.
