Rampart is a mix of action and strategy for the Sega Genesis, developed by Silicon Sorcery and published by Tengen in 1992, brought home from a mega hit arcade machine. You become a powerful medieval warlord defending a stretch of coast: build huge fortresses, position your cannons and blast away at enemy fortifications and the armadas sailing in to shell you. What makes Rampart unusual is the way it folds a puzzle into a battle, with walls to rebuild under pressure between every exchange of fire.
Each round moves through three phases. First you place cannons inside your walls, then the shooting starts and both sides trade fire, then the smoke clears and you have a short time to lay falling wall pieces so that they enclose at least one castle. Fail to close the loop and you are finished, which is where all the tension comes from. Rampart supports two players, and the versus matches are the heart of the cartridge: fast, loud, and decided as often by a steady hand at wall building as by good aim.
Rampart has aged well because its rules are simple and its pressure is real. Anyone can learn it in a single round, and nobody masters it quickly. The Genesis version keeps the pace and the lightning fast feel of the coin op version, and a second controller turns it into one of the better competitive games on the system. For collectors, Rampart is a Tengen release worth seeking out and a reliable pick whenever a guest asks what to play.
