Rastan Saga II is an action platformer developed and published by Taito for the Sega Genesis in 1990, carrying the arcade sword fighting that made the Rastan name onto the console. The young warrior Rastan rises up to help his people recapture the Stone of the Wise, now held by a horde of demonic creatures. Legend says that whoever takes the stone to the top of the Skyscraper, a towering temple, will be given the power to rule over the earth, so the demons must be stopped, and only Rastan and his trusty sword can do it.
Play is a steady march forward, sword in hand, through stages thick with monsters and traps. Rastan Saga II is a one player game built on the arcade rhythm of the series: learn the reach of your weapon, learn the patterns, then pick your moment to swing, duck or jump. Pickups change what Rastan can carry into a fight, each stage ends with a large boss creature, and the whole thing moves at the brisk, unforgiving pace of a machine that was always hoping for another coin.
Rastan Saga II is for players who like their action games firm. It asks for memorization and rewards it, and the dark fantasy art holds up beautifully: big sprites, grim backdrops and a hero who looks the part. For collectors chasing Taito titles on the Genesis, Rastan Saga II is a satisfying find and a good reminder of how arcade action came home at the start of the nineties, loud, difficult and proud of it.
