Re-Volt is a radio control racing game developed by Acclaim Studios and published by Acclaim Entertainment in 1999 for the Nintendo 64. Rather than putting you behind the wheel of a full size race car, Re-Volt shrinks everything down to little R/C machines and turns ordinary rooms into racetracks. What makes it stand out is its commitment to true R/C physics: the cars feel light and skittish, they tip and tumble, and the objects and surfaces around you affect the action just as they would in real life.

Four different racing modes sit at the heart of Re-Volt, joined by Stunt Track and Battle Tag for players who would rather show off or chase each other around. Races run through places like museums and toy stores, with traffic to blast past and plenty of chaos to cause using bottle rockets, water balloons and oil slicks. Up to four players can race at once, which is where Re-Volt turns into proper living room madness. A custom track editor is included too, so you can design your own circuits and then take them on.

Players still love Re-Volt because the handling rewards practice: once you learn how much grip a surface gives you and how little it takes to flip a car, the whole game opens up. The settings help as well, since racing a tiny car across a museum floor never stops being funny. For collectors, Re-Volt is one of the more distinctive racers on the Nintendo 64, a console better known for its karts and its rally cars, and it holds its own beside them.
