Red Zone is a helicopter action shooter for the Sega Genesis, developed by the Danish studio Zyrinx and published by Time Warner Interactive in 1994. A nuclear armed dictator has begun annexing his neighbors with plans to keep expanding, and under the threat of global nuclear war the answer is not an army but three special operatives, sent in covertly with a single gunship. You fly that Apache into the heart of enemy territory with one objective: remove the dictator's ability to wage war. Red Zone is also remembered as one of the most technically ambitious games on the console, with a hard edged look entirely its own.
Most of Red Zone plays out as air to ground combat, the Apache viewed from above as you work through hostile territory with a hefty loadout: rockets, guided missiles, a built in 30 mm cannon and infrared air to air missiles for threats arriving from the air, land and sea. Fuel and ammunition drain the whole time, so knowing where the fuel drums and repair kits are waiting matters as much as your aim, in a way that will feel familiar to anyone who has played the Strike games. Red Zone goes a step further with damage: as your systems take hits, the helicopter grows harder to control and the weapon and radar systems suffer for it. It is a game for one pilot, start to finish.
Players still come back to Red Zone for the weight of it, a mission structure that rewards planning, a flight model that punishes carelessness and a presentation that surprises people who thought they knew what the Genesis could do. Zyrinx made very few games, which gives Red Zone a particular place on a Genesis shelf, and it sits naturally beside the Strike series and the console's other serious minded military titles. A fine pick for shooter fans and for collectors filling out the library alike.
